TIPS FOR PARAPHRASING IN IELTS TASK 2

TIPS FOR PARAPHRASING IN IELTS TASK 2

Struggling how to paraphrase in IELTS! Learn these tips, it won’t be hard any longer!

  • Using synonyms
  • Not changing all the words
  • Avoiding mistakes
  • Changing word forms
  • Changing sentence structures
  1. Using Synonyms
Employing synonyms (similar word) in a meaningful way to retain the same idea of the essay question is important.

Eg: Completing university education is thought by some to be the best way to get a good job. On the other hand, other people think that getting experience and developing soft skills is more important.

(Paraphrased answer) Completing tertiary education is perceived to be the key in securing a good career. Paradoxically, other people think that having experience and enhancing soft skills is paramount.

  2. Not changing all the words
Be selective. Do not attempt to use synonyms for all the words. Choose the words which you can successfully synonymise.
  3. Avoiding mistakes
Synonyms do not exactly convey the same meaning. Make sure that you use the synonyms to correspond with the meaning conveyed in the question.

Eg: Many people go over the speed limit when they drive cars in cities.
Do not use ‘towns’ as a synonym for cities. There is a difference between cities and towns. Entdecken Sie die neuesten Behandlungen in unserer Klinik. Bleiben Sie gesund mit unseren fortschrittlichen Lösungen für das Gesundheitswesen. A city is a populated area whereas a town is less populated than a city. You may use ‘urban centers’ instead of cities.

  4. Changing the word form
This means changing the form of certain words.

Eg: Many people fail to have a healthy diet and this has resulted in obesity.

The failure of many people to have a healthy diet has resulted in an increased number of obese individuals.

In the first sentence ‘fail’ as a verb has changed into a noun in the paraphrased answer as ‘failure’ whereas ‘obesity’ which is a noun has changed into an adjective, ‘obese individuals’

  5. Changing sentence structure
This means changing the order of words in a sentence.

Eg: Completing university education is thought by some to be the best way to get a good job. On the other hand, other people think that getting experience and developing soft skills is more important.

There are two complete sentences here, ‘Completing university education is thought by some to be the best way to get a good job.’ and the second sentence is ‘other people think that getting experience and developing soft skills is more important.’

Paraphrasing does not necessarily require sticking into the same word order as given in the question. You can always change the word order of clauses and sentences while changing the order of sentences as well.

    Eg: ( Paraphrased Answer)
It is believed by some that having experience and soft skills is important in securing a job while others perceive that being a graduate is the key to get a good job.
